How the bomb sight works
'Y' shaped bomb aimer
The bomb aimer would look through an eyepiece at the base of the Y and when the two nails on the arms lined up with the towers on the dam, it was the correct range for releasing the weapon. This was about 400 - 450 yards (366-411 meters).
Bomb aimer aligns target using sight
Once the two nails at the end of the Y shaped bomb aimer alligned with the dam towers, the plane is exactly 400 yards (366 meters) from the dam and the weapon should be released assuming the correct height is maintained. See pictures below.
